Poppy Homage

I had a bunch of "Whoa!" reactions to this outfit today.
I think it's the red and black combo - that's always perceived as sexy and "out there," you know, like the stereotypical "dragon lady."

I prefer to think of myself as an homage to the poppy in honour of Remembrance Day. The poem "In Flanders Fields" (link) always makes me choke up.

  • Top - Forever 21, consignment; last seen here in April with cerulean
  • Cami - Spense, consignment
  • Skirt - no label; purchased here in September for $5.00
  • Shoes - Marc; last seen here (2nd outfit) in September for the vintage expo

I love this Forever 21 top (I know! surprisingly nice!), especially layered over red - DRAMA!
I sewed up the ripped back of the skirt a couple of weeks ago, but the bottom of the slit has pulled apart again (no stretch at all), so maybe one more wear before I scrap it. Still, for $5.00, I'm happy with it. It's a very sweet skirt.

The stuff:
Love these shoes! I know the whole platform thing is falling out of style, but I am going to keep wearing these - and I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before platforms are back in.

Poppy-ish bling:
No one commented on my Bajoran ear decoration (thank you, Aya, that is exactly it!), so I think it was a little too much for my conservative coworkers...not that their opinions will stop me from wearing it!

  • Red cuff - Rimanchik
  • Black cuff - Guess, thrifted
  • Coral earring - local
  • Bajoran earring - Claire's

Off to Book Club shortly, and I'm double-booked tomorrow night (and I promise a crazy hat!), and a bunch of us are going to see a band on Saturday night AND I have my other niece for Day With Crazy Auntie Sheila on Sunday...so I'm outta here for a bit, but Shoe Shine will be up tomorrow!

  1. That is such a pretty skirt - you are getting good cost per wear out of it at least, even if it is a hassle to wear, you only spent $5 on it! :)

Black and red is always a powerful but fun combination :)

  2. That F21 top is wonderful and I love it with the tights; they mirror each other bit giving the outfit a nice symmetry. Wonderful skirt too; sorry it doesn't have any stretch, that's the worst.

  3. The skirt IS very cool. (But it is a pain to have to keep stitching up the seams.) I really like those shoes! You looked fabulous - as usual..

  5. Fantastic ensemble! Many great elements--you really know how to combine things, which is why I love your blog so much. That skirt is gorgeous--I wish it were more comfortable and well made so that you could keep wearing it.

I have always loved black and red. I remember when I wore it in junior high (40 years ago?!) that I was called "slut" all day, and it took a long while for me to wear that pairing again. Come to think of it, I still rarely do it! Probably pair dark reds with certain shades of green (loden, sage) more. But I adore seeing this combination on you!

  6. I do love black and red, and I would be tempted to sew the split in the skirt up again, extra firmly, because it's a lovely piece!
Poppies on lapels are fairly ubiquitous here in the UK at this time of year. xxx

  7. When I think of you, I think drama -- but only the fashion kind!

  8. Super pretty! Of course, now all I can think of is the poppies scene from the Wizard of Oz!

  9. Yeah, red and black is definitely a power combo. You look great in it!

If you are attached to the skirt, put a patch of tougher material on the inside where you're sewing the split, to reinforce the fabric and hold the two ends together.

  10. I love red and black and this is a gorgeous outfit. I love all of the components and while I don't wear platform shoes I really like those ones and I'm glad you are keeping them. Too bad about the skirt, as it's really pretty.
